Type A, Type B, and Type AB self-tapping sheet metal screws are designed to create their own threads in materials like metal, wood, or plastic without the need for pre-drilling. However, for certain applications or with harder materials, pre-drilling may still be recommended to ensure proper alignment and to reduce the risk of damaging the screw or the material being fastened.

Type A screws are characterized by their thread-forming design with widely spaced threads and a gimlet point for easy penetration. They typically have a 45-degree thread angle and a larger pitch compared to Type B and Type AB screws. Type B screws, on the other hand, feature a sharper thread angle of around 30 degrees and a finer pitch, providing increased thread-cutting ability. Type AB screws combine features of both Type A and Type B, featuring a compromise between thread-forming and thread-cutting capabilities.
